"The Tenant House"
Alvin Thomas Outlaw 1941-2005
A wood sculptor and painter of Black Art, Mr. Outlaw depicted life as he experienced it during the 40's and 50's. Every painting tells a story of a time of struggle but endearing and simple life.
Mr. Outlaw lived this life until graduating from high school in 1961 when he began a career as a barber. His insatiable desire to express himself artistically was limited by his growing clientele, but he managed to carve between haircuts.
In October of 1995, his urge to paint took hold. He began with "The Tenant House" and painted nine years ending with an unfinished piece (number 286) that some want to call "The Tree of Life".
People who have had the opportunity to visit Alvin's Gallery and see with their own eyes this great work of art have said over and over again that his work should be in a Museum where people of all walks of life can have the chance to experience his collection of an important time in History. There have also been several news articles written about Alvin. One of the most notable instances about his work was when some of it was displayed on the Television Series, Everybody Loves Raymond.
